Homebrew equipment
I’ve broken the equipment in to 2 categories, what I currently use, and a minimalist setup from what you likely have in your kitchen. First we’ll start with my current setup.
If you’ve googled homebrew setups you’ll find that there are a multitude of options out there. I don’t claim to have the best setup, in fact this setup was solely based on the advice of a fellow homebrewer. For our needs, it has worked very well without issues of poor conversion efficiency, stuck mashes, etc. If you replicate my setup and use bottled(jugs) water I guarantee you’ll brew a solid beer. Plenty of other setups will work just as well, so if you’re modifying an existing setup don’t sweat it but YMMV.
Homebrew Equipment:
- Main Brewpot (Mash tun): 15 Gallon Stainless Steel
- Hot Water Pot (HLT): ~7 gallon aluminum or stainless
- Strainer (Lauter tun): 5 gal food grade bucket with holes drilled in bottom, stacked in a second bucket with spigot. (example here)
- Propane burner (~50,000 btu/h)
- ½ gallon pitcher
- Brew thermometer (after having a digital and a dial thermometer die on me, I now use an old school alcohol thermometer that floats from brewing store)
- Racking Cane
- Corny Keg (Two 5 gallon kegs)
- Co2 bottle and quick connects/tubing
- Hydrometer (if you want to know the alcohol content)
- Hop bags
- 15 gallon glass demijohn or Two 6.5 gallon glass carboys
- Stoppers and bubblers for carboys/demijohn
Brewing ingredients:
Hefeweisen
- 15 Gallons of water (you can definitely use tap water, but risk multiple issues if the water chemistry is off)
- 12 lbs wheat
- 5lbs 2-row
- 2oz Hallertau
- 2oz Tettnanger
- 2 Vials White labs yeast. Recommend any of the following: WLP300, WLP380, WLP320
Pale Ale
- 15 Gallons of water (you can definitely use tap water, but risk multiple issues if the water chemistry is off)
- 2 lbs crystal malt 20L
- 15lbs 2-row
- 2oz Hallertau
- 4oz Cascade
- 2 Vials White labs yeast. Recommend any of the following: WLP001, WLP008
Other Supplies:
- PBW or Star San cleaner/sanitizer
- Optional Items
- Irish Moss
- Yeast Nutrient
